Situated right at the heart of the National Forest, Coalville is one of the principal towns in North West Leicestershire. As its name suggests, Coalville is a former coal mining town, with mining being part of its heritage since medieval times. Following the closure of the collieries, the town has been widely re-developed, with pedestrianised shopping and traditional retail areas, including a new market hall, a diverse mix of restaurants and cafes, ample public car parking, business parks, public amenities (including the local authority offices and health care facilities) plus, public nature trails and a theatre. The latest edition to the town is the 22.5-million-pound leisure centre boasting a state-of-the-art gymnasium, two pools, fitness studios, a climbing wall, squash courts, an eight-court sports hall, an adventure trail, a sauna steam room and spa pool and café.
Coalville is home to Stephenson College, a modern, high-tech college of further and higher education, offering a wide variety of courses. Castle Rock School caters for 11-18-year-olds, providing GCSEs, A-Levels and vocational courses. Newbridge High School is a specialist sports college. The town also has several primary schools. The town is conveniently positioned on the A511 trunk road between Leicester and Burton upon Trent, close to junction 22 of the M1 motorway.
